Yogomaia Primary School Teachers, in Kabala, Koinadugu District have formally complained the Capital Express Insurance Company Limited for failing to pay them their retirement benefit since 2013. The aggrieved teachers retired in 2018 and have been pursuing the Scheme which they joined in 2013 to pay their benefits but to no avail.

The scheme which covers death in service and permanent disability or retirement benefit was conveyed and introduced in Kabala by two ladies Fatu Kakay and Flouricia both staff of Capital Express Insurance in Makeni.

Speaking to this medium, one of the aggrieved retired teachers, Mrs. Fatmata Mboh Jalloh said she together with her colleague teachers joined the Sierra Leone Teaches Group Life Scheme under the Capital Express Assurance Company Limited in 2013, and became registered and enrolled members of the scheme with an acceptance letter dated and signed by the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Mr. Abdul Karim Sesay.

According to an agreement with the Insurance Company, those teachers that are closed to retirement paid for a premium of twenty six thousand Leones per month whilst those that are new and have more time in teaching paid lesser.

Madam Jalloh added that all efforts to get their retirement benefit from the Capital Express Assurance proved futile and they have in agreement with other teachers written a letter of complaint to the Ombudsman’s Office in Makeni to look into their case as one of their colleagues who was on the fight Mr. Karim B. Sesay from DEC had died.

In an interview with the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Capital Express Insurance at his No. 6 Walpole Street Office in Freetown, Mr. Abdul Karim Sesay confirmed the allegation and the membership of the following teachers from DEC School, Fatmata M. Jalloh, Karim B. Sesay now deceased, Abu Bakarr D. Fofana and Foday B.L. Keita to the Sierra Leone Teachers Group Life Scheme.

He assured to pay the retired teachers’ claims in November 2019 but failed to adhere to his promise, and on our second engagement Mr. Abdul Karim Sesay told this reporter that the delay is as a result of the office of the Accountant General and the Bank of Sierra Leone.

Mr. Sesay again promised that to pay the aggrieved retired teachers’ benefit when the Accountant General and the Bank of Sierra Leone pay deductions.

Since then and up to date the teachers have not received a single cent from the Capital Express Insurance Company as benefit.
