A Science Laboratory at the Koyeima Government Secondary School in the Valunia Chiefdom has become a danger to students, teachers and workers at the school.
The Laboratory which was originally created at the inception of the school in the 1900s had a lot of live animals which the then students performed laboratory tests. But since the advent of the war, which led to the abandonment of the school by both the staff and students, the animals sneaked out of the lab and found their way into the immediate surrounding bushes. And since these animals are no longer under control, they end up by invading the school day-in-day-out.
“Within the period of establishing the school, the founders established a place of experiments where the students would be performing their practical’s, but since the war broke out, all the poisonous snakes went on the rampage and surrounded the entire school environment, ” Katta, Head of Labourers said.
Due to the deplorable condition of the school buildings at present, the snakes, he said, “always find themselves in some corners, only to come out at any time to cause rampage in the school.”
“The reptiles always take advantage of the coolness and the dilapidated nature of the buildings to invade there on a daily basis for the past ten years now.”
Despite the problem, a Senior Teacher who chose to be anonymous said that the school was suffering not only from dilapidation but that also “we do not have electricity to supply the boys at night for them to at least study.” The school, he also added that at the present, lacks quarters for teachers and that there is also no medical facility for the students.
