Under the purview of the Sierra Rutile Mining Company and with the good initiative of the Bonthe District Chairman, Madam Rital G. Savage, the Sierra Rutile Foundation on Saturday 19th April 2014 donated two hundred bundles of corrugated iron/zincs and other building materials to relocated mining communities.
The serial donations were conducted at Mbelebu and Gandohun, in the Imperi chiefdom Bonthe district and Ndendemoya in the Lower Banta chiefdom as well as Montinga in the Upper Banta chiefdom in the Moyamba district respectively. The donation includes 200 bundles of corrugated iron roofing, 100 packets of roofing nails, 100 packets of wire nail and a role of roofing felt all worth million of leones.
The Sierra Rutile Foundation was established in 2009 as non-profitable organization with the aim of financing sustainable community development projects that will improve the socio-economic and infrastructural conditions of the host mining communities.
In her keynote address at Montiga village, the dynamic and popular Bonthe District Chairman, who also doubles as Chairman of the Sierra Rutile Foundation said the organization has a steering committee, consisting of the local chiefs of the mining communities, staff of Sierra Rutile Company and members of the Moyamba and Bonthe District Councils.
She informed that the sole financier of the Sierra Rutile Foundation is the Sierra Rutile Company but that the Bonthe or Moyamba District Chairmen always serves as chairperson of the Foundation. According to her, after consultations and monitoring, the committee considered that some mining communities that were relocated are in dire need of roofing materials. She assured the people that Sierra Rutile Foundation will continue to give supports to the various mining communities.
In his statement, Paramount Chief of Imperi Chiefdom, PC Tommy Mualala Jobla said the donation was very timely.
He pointed out that many people were complaining that their shelters leak when it rains. He said the Montiga community was relocated some 60years ago but this is the very first time they are having such a donation. He commended the Bonthe District Chairman for initiating such a project for his people, while appealing to his people to foster the good relationship between Sierra Rutile and their communities.
Chief Operation Officer at Sierra Rutile Company, Andy Taylor said as long as his company continues to operate, the foundation will be stronger and the people will continue to benefit from it. He stressed on the need to establish a very cordial relationship between the company and the community people.
The village authorities and residents who received the donation expressed thanks and appreciation to Sierra Rutile Company and commended the Bonthe District Chairman for instituting this initiative for the very first time.
