...Disgruntled Youths Go Wild
Thousands of irate football youths across the city on Monday went wild the streets of Freetown, demonstrating against the unpopular decision of the FIFA’s Normalization Committee which failed to carry the mandate given to them by FIFA to normalize football in the country.
Without hesitation, the Committee had the temerity to disqualify five candidates including Presidential hopeful, Rodney Michael, Sierra Leone legend Mohamed Kallon, seasoned administrators, Foday Turay, Idrissa `Mago` Tarawallie and former Leone Stars striker, John Dissa.
The distressful youths, however, heaped enormous blame on the Minister of Sports, Paul Abu Bakarr Kamara for the debacle that has marred football over the years. They maintained that his previous statement of nullifying the elections if Rodney and others are not disqualified has certainly come to pass.
Abu Bakarr Mansaray aka “Salone Pekin” said the decision of the Normalization Committee was a plot to destroy football in the country. He said: “Paul Kamara had endorsed the Committee’s decision. This is about Sierra Leone not Isha, Rodney or Foday Turay issue, adding that they should provide a level playing for candidates. It`s unreal for a candidate to go unopposed in a democratic process,”
He maintained that there are no justifications that led the disqualification of candidates. According to Mamadi Gobeh Kamara, who is a member of the Normalization Committee, Rodney Michael, Foday Turay, Idrissa `Mago` Tarawallie and John Dissa contravened Article 25 while Mohamed Kallon has not met the requirement of Article 32 (4) of the SLFA Constitution which states that: “The members of the executive committee shall be citizens of Sierra Leone and shall have resided In Sierra Leone for a period of no less than (5) years prior to congress of which they seek to be elected.”
The youths maintained that the clause which Kallon was indicted is seen as not appropriate as the Committee was totally misguided, “the Committee do not know the difference between a football calendar and the normal calendar otherwise they would have done the right thing by allowing him, besides even though he signed a year contract with a Chinese that never stopped him from honoring Leone Stars matches and having time with his family and club members,” they told this press.
What again remains ironically is for non-legally minded people to interpret clauses their own way while at the same ignoring the legal opinion expressed by the lawyer who was invited at the screening committee.
