After several rescheduling, a new date has finally been agreed on for commencement of 2013 Sierra Leone Premier League which is Wednesday July 3 in the rainy season.
The Spokesperson of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) Sorie Ibrahim Sesay told sierraleonefootball.com that the new date was picked following a meeting between the SLFA Normalisation Committee headed by Alie Fornah and officials of the 14 Premier League clubs last Monday.
This comes exactly a year after the completion of the 2012 Premier League won by Diamond Stars of Kono to become the first team outside Freetown to win the Sierra Leone top flight league.
According Sesay the league will be run by SLFA Premier League Board who now has a new chairman in Ishmail Koroma, former Sports Journalist and Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ).
“It’s going to be a two-round league with the first round due to finish on August 17, and nine venues in all will be used for the league matches,” added Sesay.
He concluded: “The full fixtures are not yet out but I can confirm that Ports Authority FC will lock horns with FC Johansen in the league’s opening game at the Wusum Field in Makeni.”
The nine venues Sesay has outlined are National Stadium, SLFA academy field, Brima Atouga Kamara mini stadium, Newton playing field-all in the Western Area, Wusum field in Makeni, Coronation ground in Bo, Kenema Town field, Tongo field in Kenema district and Koidu field in Kono.
The first round period of the league (July-August) is when Sierra Leone normally experience heavy down pours of rain and the organisers must have to be highly lucky not to have an interrupted league.
Meanwhile, there are reports that the SLFA Normalisation Committee will conduct elections to usher in new executive Committee on July 27, four days to the end of their mandate given to them by world’s football governing body, FIFA.
