Airtel Sierra Leone on Wednesday 26th June 2013 launched the Western Area Rising Star Qualifier. The ceremony which was held at the studios of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) television at New England in Freetown, attracted several personalities including the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Ishmael Al-Sankoh Conteh, management, staff of Airtel as well as representatives of the qualified team.
In his welcome statement, the Commercial Director of Airtel, Mr. Keith Tukei said Airtel is not only in the country to do business but to contribute to the development of the country, especially in the area of sports.
He said some time back, Airtel launched its ‘Rising Star’ tournament in order to create a platform to identify young talents in football. He said the tournament brought out young and talented boys and girls who were selected to participate in the Pan African Tournament expected to be held in Nigeria this year.
Mr. Tukei went on that four players are going to be selected from Sierra Leone for placement in the Manchester United football clinic in Congo DRC.
Deputy Minister of Youth and Sport, Mr. Al-Sankoh Conteh expressed delight in the Airtel Rising Star tournament.
He said Airtel Rising Star is one of the best ways through which Sierra Leone can develop its football. He said through the Airtel Rising tournament, players can develop their talents and skills in football, whilst assuring that his ministry is highly committed towards the improvement of the sport in Sierra Leone.
A sports commentator, Abubakarr Kanu of Radio Kalleone said Airtel started the Rising Star tournament in Sierra Leone some three years ago with the first and second phases already completed. The 2013 tournament according to him will be the third phase.
He said the tournament is one of the best ways to identify football young stars below age 17 years, adding that since the commencement of the tournament, they have been able to identify uprising players who are now playing big time football in several clubs across the country.
